Tach Generator w/ Mounting Plate, Pre-owned
Tach Generator used on all M14-P powered Russian aircraft.
Factory equipment uses this three-phase voltage generator in conjunction with the tachometer to report engine RPM.
Max RPM on the M14-P series motors is 2900 rpm corresponding to 100%.
This unit locks to the engine accessory case close to the air-start Spider, via a serrated ring nut which should be safety wired. With age, it is commonplace for the body and this securing nut to display some radial play.
The most common problem with this system is the cannon plug carrying the signal, whose design and operating environment conspire to crack the three signal wires. Check there before replacing this generator, which is very robust and is not prone to failure.
This Tach generator is self-contained does not require ship power to function. Put another way, if you are having tachometer reading problems, this unit can be released from the engine and spun with a hand-held drill to get a readout in the cockpit.
If any of the DOSAAF students showed piloting promise, they would be taken aside for 'the talk' about a career with the Russian air force, where they would be flying jets, at which point percentage of engine output would already be familiar.
If you own a 52TW or 52W, these aircraft underwent aftermarket modifications that removed this system in favor of an American style, cable driven tachometer which reads RPM.
